My obsession with Blue October is no secret. I saw them for my birthday last year (ie the best night of my life). I got a tattoo with their name on it the year before that. Since 2005, I have been following and listening, and loving every second of it.
Their new album Every Man in America has me... confused.
Their old albums were so poetic and emotive, the lyrics moved me to tears from beauty or sadness. Every song was relatable in some way. Justin was able to express situations beautifully without revealing specifics. The sound was original, and if they ventured into other sounds they made it their own.
This album... is disappointing to say the least. And it took me about 3 weeks to form an opinion.
I didnt need to know the specifics of Justin's divorce. I didnt need to hear about the custody battle with his daughter Blue. I get that he was burned but I dont need to hear negative generalizations about women or the legal system. I also didnt want to hear any of this with the help of autotune or a rap guest artist.
All the poetry has been ripped out. The flow of their music is gone. The verses suck and the choruses are just catchy. Theres no relating to any of these songs because, although I have been burned by an ex lover and suffered similar tragedies, I have never been divorced and I've never had a kid. I dont give a shit about any of this. And exploiting his situation like this is just... cheap.
He looks like more of a dick than his ex wife because the ENTIRE ALBUM is about the ENTIRE process from pre-separation to post-divorce. We dont hear her side. We hear some of the things she said about you and then a tangent about how shes wrong. Dude, you're obviously unstable and you're obviously unable to be there for her, thats why us as fans love you cause you're there for us more than anything else. Thats a problem if you want a healthy marriage.
And theres just no... subtle hints anywhere. Its just laid out for the entire world to see. Thats tacky. Seriously, a whole song about how she freaked out about a flood in the basement and called you for help? Very catchy chorus but the content is just...god.
And I'm offended by the Every Man in America song. Basically its complaining about how hard it is to be a dad and the legal system will only give children to their mothers. So, fuck you on that. First of all, its set up that way for a reason, most fathers suck as parents and do not have the same attachment to their children like the mothers do. Also, many divorces stem from the fathers retardery. Second, I've had many female friends who have lost custody of their children to the fathers - because they were better fit parents. The court looks at everything. You are a touring musician, you cant care for a child all the time, you dont deserve full custody.
Side note, mentioning your kid in every fucking song is really annoying. The first song about her "Blue Does" was really sweet and lovely but now its just tawdry. Shut up about your kid.
I still love Blue October, I always will. I'm not going to see them when they tour with this album. All I'll hear is aggravating songs and more than likely some narration as to why his ex is a cunt. I'm just sticking around and hoping their next album revisits their roots and what got them so many devoted fans. We need more fiddle, heavier guitar, NO MORE kanye west autotune garbage, and the poetry needs to return. I have faith in them. Every band has a bad album, and so far this is the only disappointment. I'll listen to Consent to Treatment until this blows over,
